2010 Connecticut Belair Gators The success of your child’s swimming experience depends on many different factors. Our coaching staff will place each child in the appropriate workout level according to his/her individual skill. Children will gain self-esteem while working on their swimming skills. Being a swimmer may be temporary, self-esteem lasts forever.
A good portion of practice will involve repetition of skills, work on strength, endurance and technique. What may appear to be playing around might actually be a swimming drill to improve technique. Please remember to reward your child for the effort and dedication they have given. As in most situations in life, these two skills will encourage positive outcomes.
Remember to be positive and supportive not only with your child, but with other members on the team as well. This includes being supportive at the team functions. We cannot run a successful team without parent volunteers. We require every family to come out and help. If at anytime there is a suggestion or concern, please feel free to set up a meeting with the coaches or Swim Team Committee Chairman.

Swim Team Requirements:
To join the swim team a person must be a member of CB pool, must be 18 or younger as of 6-1-10, and must be able to swim 25 meters (one length of the pool) continuously (i.e. without stopping to stand on the bottom or hang onto the lane rope).
To join the Pre-Team a swimmer must be able to float and move his/her arms & legs in the water to propel his /her body forward at least 20 feet. Generally, but not always, this includes most swimmers ages 6 and under. He or she must also be comfortable in the water without having a coach right next to him or her in the water. The goal of a Pre-Team swimmer is to strive to qualify for swim team by accomplishing the task of swimming 25 meters continuously.
Assessments for Pre-Team will be made during morning practice on 6/17 and 6/18. If a swimmer is unsure about joining the team, he/she may participate in a one-week trial free of charge prior to making a decision. Should the swimmer decide to join, parents must complete the registration process in order for the swimmer to continue. Once a swimmer has completed the registration/joined the team, no refunds will be given if the swimmer decides to quit.
Time Trials:
Date: Sat. June 12th
Where: CB Pool (arrive at 7:45am)
When: Warm-up 8:00am, Meet Starts 8:30am.
What: Time Trials is like a practice meet that accomplishes several objectives. First, it allows coaches to get times for the swimmers in every event. Second, it allows “new” team members and their parents to get acquainted with the swim meet format and their responsibilities. Third, it allows new officials a chance to practice their jobs.
Who: All swimmers and all parents. This is the only time scheduled for Time Trials, so as a result, it is mandatory for all swimmers to attend in order to get a time!
Swim Meet Scheduling:
From 6/1 thru 6/12 there will be a chart posted on the bulletin board outlining the swim meet schedule. If a swimmer will be unavailable to swim in any of the meets this season, he or she must indicate so on the chart. This chart will be removed from the bulletin board on 6/12. After 6/12, if a swimmer becomes unavailable to swim in a meet, please put that information in writing (swimmer’s name, date of meet they are unable to attend) and give it to the Head Coach Danny Benedetti, or call him at 301-655-1995. Meet Line-Ups will be completed by coaching staff and posted on the bulletin board as follows:
Wed. “B” meets: Tues. (the day before) at 8:00 am.
Sat. “A” meets: Fri. (the day before) at 8:00am.
Everyone should double check the lineup to see if they (or their children) are scheduled to swim Placement of a swimmer in a meet is ultimately the decision of the coaching staff. In the case of “A” meets, the coach will generally place the three fastest swimmers in each event. However, there are occasions when this will not occur. First, each individual swimmer is only allowed to enter three events (excluding the individual medley). Second, the coaches will make strategic adjustments to a meet line-up when considering what will most benefit the team and contribute to a win. Finally, there are always swimmers who for whatever reason are unavailable to swim in a meet. Therefore, it is critical that swimmers and parents check the line-up to see which swimmers are scheduled to compete. Swimmers and their parents should never “assume” they are not entered in a meet.
B Meet: In general, anyone swimming 3 or more events in the A Meet will not swim in the B Meet. If a swimmer competes in an event in the A Meet and scores any points they are not eligible to swim that event in the B Meet. We do not allow B Meet swims for “exhibition” or to “get a time.” There will be available practice time for such events.
General Notes Regarding Swim Meets: Swimmers must wear the CB Gator team bathing suit in swim meets. Our swimwear representative:

Goggles and swim caps are optional, but highly recommended.
“Home” meets: Swimmers should arrive and check in by 7:30am. Warm-up is 7:45-8:15am.
“Away” meets: It is necessary for swimmers to report to CB Pool before traveling to an away A Meet.
This allows swimmers to check in with the coaching staff. If a swimmer does not check in he/she risks being scratched from the meet and replaced by another swimmer. Swimmers should remain in the team area during swim meets. This is necessary so swimmers will know when to report to clerk-of-course. If a swimmer has a pressing need to leave the team area, he/she should check with a coach. Swimmers should not bring any other sporting equipment (footballs, soccer balls, etc) to the swim meet.
Swimmers should speak with their coaches immediately prior to reporting to clerk of course, as well as upon finishing their races. This gives the coaching staff a chance to offer advice, reminders, constructive criticism, and feedback. Swimmers should not leave a meet until it has ended. If for some valid reason a swimmer must leave early, he/she must talk with the head coach before leaving.
It is recommended that swimmers refrain from eating sugary and/or fatty snacks during the course of the swim meet. Recommended snacks: plain bagel, fruit, peanut butter crackers, energy bars. Recommended drinks: water is best, but sports drinks are O.K. (preferably diluted 50%-50% with water). When swimmers have completed all their races (including relays if applicable) then they may eat the treats!
Gator Team Apparel:
Once again, the team bathing suit is mandatory. We will make every effort to keep the same bathing suit style for a minimum of two consecutive years. We will offer a wonderful selection of additional Gator Wear:
Flannel Pants - $22 T-shirts - $10 Hooded Sweatshirt - $22 Sweatpants - $20 Mesh shorts - $18 Polo shirts - $20 Tank tops - $10
Limited quantities of the above items will be available for purchase from the Gator Gear Salesperson.
Additional Team Activities:
Pep Rallies: will be held Fri. evenings from 6-7:15pm at the pool. The coaches will give a brief pep talk and give out weekly awards. The Gator Groups will have a chance to work together in the water, practicing for the meet. Afterwards, the team captains will teach/lead the team in cheers. Art supplies will be available for the kids to create signs/posters and chalk messages on the sidewalk with chalk. Swimmers will be served Popsicles. This is a time for team building. Pep rallies will end promptly at 7:15pm so swimmers can return home for a good night’s sleep.
Gator Group Program: At the first Pep Rally (06/18), Gator Groups will be announced. This is a system where older team members are paired with younger team members for the purpose of mentoring and establishing team unity. Gator Groups should make an effort to get to know each other, cheer for one another at swim meets, and offer guidance to one another.
Awards Banquet: An end of the year celebration will be held Saturday evening after Divisionals. We will have dinner followed by an Awards Presentation. Swimmers in the 8 & Under age group and any new swimmer to the team will receive a team trophy. There will also be trophies awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd High Point for each age group, Most Improved Swimmer (Boy and Girl), Spirit Awards, and Coach’s Awards. Graduating Seniors will also be recognized. The awards presentation is followed by the annual slide show.
General Notes Regarding Practice: During the first two weeks of practice (before the school year ends) there will be no practice for the Pre-Team. Parents of children ages 10 and under must remain on the pool grounds while the child is at practice, or make arrangements for another adult to be responsible for their child. When practice is over, swimmers should LEAVE THE POOL GROUNDS. Swimmers should arrive for practice 5-10 min. early to allow time to prepare themselves for practice and begin warm-ups in a timely fashion. Parents: Please do not approach the coaching staff to talk with them during swim team practice. They remain available for parent/coach communication at the end of each practice, or you may wish to put your questions/concerns in writing and leave the message in the designated spot on the bulletin board.
